Oils & Waxes

Oils and waxes are natural finishes commonly used to protect and enhance the appearance of wood surfaces. They provide a rich and warm finish while nourishing the wood and offering some level of protection. Oils and waxes can be applied to both interior and exterior wood projects, such as furniture, flooring, and countertops.

Oils, such as linseed oil, tung oil, and Danish oil, penetrate the wood fibres, moisturizing and enriching the natural beauty of the wood. These oils enhance the grain patterns, deepen the color, and provide a satin or matte finish. They are often used to highlight the natural characteristics of the wood, as they offer a more transparent and less glossy appearance compared to other finishes. They require periodic maintenance and reapplication to keep the wood nourished and protected.

Waxes, such as beeswax or carnauba wax, are semi-solid substances that create a protective layer on the wood surface. Waxes offer a smooth and soft finish that enhances the wood's natural lustre. They provide a higher level of water resistance compared to oils and can also offer some degree of UV protection. Wood waxes are commonly applied by rubbing or buffing onto the wood surface, and they can be used alone or as a topcoat over other finishes. While waxes may not provide as robust of a protective barrier as some other finishes, they offer the advantage of being easy to apply and maintain. Waxes require periodic reapplication to maintain their protective qualities and sheen.

Both oils and waxes are considered "living finishes" as they may evolve and change over time, developing a beautiful patina with age. They are suitable for a wide range of wood species and can be used on both softwoods and hardwoods. Oils and waxes are natural, non-toxic options that are environmentally friendly and can be easily repaired or renewed as needed.
