Studio Green is the colour used on the exterior of the original studio at Farrow & Ball where many of the very first paints were mixed. It is usually best used outside where is magically appears to be much more green than on the colour card. When used in interiors it will look virtually black unless in very well lit rooms where you will see the special nuance of this shade. Dark Tones Undercoat.

Studio Green

Studio Green No. 93 is one of Farrow & Ball’s deepest and most sophisticated greens. Originally formulated for the company’s own design studio, it was chosen for its ability to appear almost black in low light yet reveal a beautifully complex green hue in brighter conditions. This depth of tone makes it both dramatic and timeless — an ideal colour for creating intimate interiors or striking exteriors with strong architectural definition.

On interior walls, Studio Green reads as a soft, velvety black with subtle green undertones that come to life under natural or directional lighting. When used externally, the natural sunlight enhances the green pigments, giving a classic, organic feel that connects beautifully with garden surroundings or traditional façades. Its transformative nature means it performs equally well in contemporary spaces as it does in heritage homes, offering sophistication without starkness.

Studio Green pairs effortlessly with crisp whites such as Wevet or All White for clean contrast, while softer neutrals like Shadow White or Shaded White can be used to tone down its intensity. Metallic accents in brass, bronze, or antique gold enhance its luxurious quality, while warm natural materials like oak or stone bring balance and warmth.

Studio Green No. 93 is a deeply atmospheric colour that brings quiet confidence and refined drama to any setting — whether used on cabinetry, walls, or exteriors, it remains one of Farrow & Ball’s most enduringly elegant dark greens.

Colour Themes

Studio Green is a deep, moody green that reads almost black in low light but reveals rich green undertones in well-lit spaces. Its intensity and versatility make it a dramatic anchor colour, perfect for feature walls, cabinetry, or architectural detailing, and it pairs beautifully with both soft neutrals and contrasting hues.

For a balanced, contrasting palette, pair Studio Green with Bone and Radicchio. Bone, a warm off-white, softens Studio Green’s depth and provides a light, neutral backdrop, while Radicchio, a deep, muted red, introduces a rich, complementary contrast. This combination works particularly well in formal or characterful interiors, providing both warmth and visual interest.

For a softer, more neutral scheme, combine Studio Green with Old White and Light Gray. Old White offers a gentle, warm base, while Light Gray adds a cool, pale layer that contrasts subtly with Studio Green’s intensity. Together, these colours create a sophisticated, airy palette where Studio Green anchors the room without overwhelming it, ideal for walls, ceilings, and trims.

For a deeper, more dramatic effect, pair Studio Green with Card Room Green and Railings. Card Room Green, a rich mid-green, complements the undertones of Studio Green, creating a layered green palette, while Railings, a dark inky blue-black, enhances depth and adds a refined contrast. This combination is particularly suited to feature walls, cabinetry, and architectural details, giving the space a sense of depth, sophistication, and character.

Studio Green is highly versatile and can be used to create subtle, neutral schemes, bold contrasts, or layered, characterful interiors. Its deep tone allows it to anchor a room, while complementary colours can either soften, highlight, or intensify its presence depending on the desired effect.
