Farrow & Ball - Stiffkey Blue (281)
Stiffkey Blue is named after the north Norfolk beach where the mud, along with the cockles, is this particular blue hue. Although traditional in feel, it is often used as an alternative to Down Pipe to create rich dramatic contemporary spaces. However when used in well lit spaces it will appear much more blue and works wonderfully when contrasted with Old White. Dark Tones Undercoat.
Stiffkey Blue
Stiffkey Blue 281 is a rich, inky navy with real gravitas yet refined elegance. The shade takes its name from the Norfolk beach of Stiffkey, where the mud and cockles reveal a deep, dramatic blue‑black tone — this grounding inspiration gives the colour both depth and character.
Despite its traditional roots, Stiffkey Blue has a surprisingly contemporary edge. Many designers use it as an alternative to Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe to create a luxurious, dramatic interior that feels more nuanced than a stark charcoal. Under bright, natural light, the blue undertones of Stiffkey Blue become more apparent, bringing a vivid yet calm vibrancy to the space.
Because of its depth and pigment, Farrow & Ball recommend using a dark tone primer or undercoat before applying Stiffkey Blue, to ensure an even, rich finish. For contrast, designers often pair it with Ammonite or Shadow White, creating a sophisticated balance that lets the blue hold its own without overpowering.
Stiffkey Blue (281) is a dramatic yet elegant navy that brings depth and mood to interiors. It’s ideal for feature walls, cabinetry or any space where you want a statement colour that’s bold, timeless and full of personality.
