Railings is a softer alternative to black on all ironwork, hence its name. When used in Full Gloss on front doors it appears handsome and commanding but becomes much more relaxed in feel if used in Estate Eggshell. The fact that it is definitely more blue than black makes it soft enough to use in interiors, to create dramatic enveloping spaces. Dark Tones Undercoat.

Railings

Railings is described by Farrow & Ball as “more blue than black” and serves as a softer alternative to pure black. It features subtle blue‑undertones that give it a velvety depth and a rich character, making it particularly suited to both interior and exterior applications such as ironwork, front doors, cabinetry, skirtings and panelling.

Railings creates a dramatic yet refined foundation. Its inky tone adds sophistication, while its blue undertone prevents it from feeling too stark or harsh. It is ideal for creating cocooning interiors, gallery walls, or for use in spaces with limited natural light where you want depth without heaviness. For example, used on kitchen units or front doors it “creates a handsome and commanding entrance” while remaining relaxed when applied in a softer finish.

When using Railings, it’s advisable to test a sample in your actual space and view it under different lighting conditions, as its depth and blue undertone shift with light and surroundings. Surface preparation is important — for dark tones an appropriate undercoat/primer is recommended.

Railings No. 31 is a sophisticated, richly tonal alternative to black—with a blue‑based character and flexibility across finishes and applications—ideal for use when you want strong definition, elegance and a refined dramatic effect.

Colour Themes

Railings is a rich, deep black‑blue with strong depth and subtle grey undertones, making it an excellent choice for creating striking contrasts or sophisticated features in interiors and exteriors. Its dark, inky tone can anchor a scheme and highlight architectural details when paired with complementary colours.

For a balanced, neutral-themed palette, pair Railings with Manor House Gray and Pavilion Gray. Manor House Gray provides a soft, warm mid-tone that contrasts gently with the darkness of Railings, while Pavilion Gray, a cooler light grey, adds subtle variation and helps brighten the overall scheme. This combination works well for walls, trims, and ceilings where you want the depth of Railings to stand out without overwhelming the space.

For a fresher, lighter scheme, Railings can be combined with Light Blue and Kittiwake. Light Blue adds a delicate, airy feel that contrasts with Railings’ intensity, while Kittiwake, a soft mid blue, acts as a neutral buffer, allowing the dark blue-black tone to pop. This pairing is ideal for creating an uplifting yet elegant atmosphere, especially in rooms with good natural light or for highlighting feature furniture and cabinetry.

For a more dramatic and character-rich effect, use Railings alongside Dimpse and Blackened. Dimpse, a muted green-grey, softens the darkness of Railings while maintaining a moody, sophisticated feel. Blackened, a pale charcoal, complements Railings’ inky depth, creating a layered and textural palette. This combination works beautifully for accent walls, joinery, or exterior details, producing a refined and impactful scheme.

Railings is versatile and can serve as an anchor colour in a variety of contexts. By pairing it with lighter neutrals, soft blues, or complementary deep tones, it can either balance a space, provide fresh contrast, or enhance dramatic, characterful interiors.
