Farrow & Ball - Off Black (57)
Off-Black like Off-White is one of the original Farrow & Ball colours – an uncomplicated name for a much used classic. It is much more flattering to adjacent colours than Pitch Black because it is so much softer in tone but has none of the underlying blue of Railings or Black Blue. Dark Tones Undercoat.
Off Black
Off‑Black 57 is a soft, refined black that leans more gentle and forgiving than a true jet black. It lacks the strong blue undertones found in darker Farrow & Ball blacks like Railings, making it more flattering to neighbouring colours.
Off‑Black reads as a mellow, charcoal‑toned black: deep enough to create contrast, but soft enough to avoid the harshness of a pure black. Because of its gentler tone, it’s particularly suited to supporting rather than overpowering adjoining shades, making it a flexible choice for both walls and trim.
When painting with Off‑Black, Farrow & Ball recommend using a dark‑tone primer or undercoat to help achieve a rich, even finish. Its complementary white is Blackened (No. 2011), which shares a compatible undertone and provides a harmonious contrast.
Off‑Black 57 is a sophisticated and timeless choice: it carries the drama and depth of black, while retaining a softness that helps it blend beautifully into interiors without feeling too severe.
