Farrow & Ball - Inchyra Blue (289)

This colour was first used at the classic Georgian Inchyra House to work with moody Scottish skies. It can be found on the exterior doors of their very impressive byre (barn) which nestles at the bottom of a rather grey and imposing brae (hill). Such is the magic of our colours, this aged blue grey, can read more grey, blue or even green depending on the light. A great alternative to charcoal, use it to inject a hint of colour into a super contemporary home, or create a moody feel by combining it with Black Blue or Vardo. Dark Tones Primer & Undercoat.

Inchyra Blue

Inchyra Blue 289 is a deeply atmospheric, aged blue-grey shade inspired by the dramatic Scottish skies that frame the Georgian Inchyra House. Its tone is moody and complex — depending on light, it can read as more grey, more blue, or even slightly green.

This colour works beautifully in both contemporary and traditional interiors. It’s often recommended as a sophisticated alternative to charcoal — it has depth, but with more richness than a flat black. When used in darker, intimate spaces, it creates a cocooning feel; in more modern homes, it can inject a subtle hint of drama and colour.

Because of its strong pigment, Farrow & Ball recommend using a dark‑tone primer and undercoat before applying Inchyra Blue, to ensure an even and rich finish. The complementary white for pairing is Shaded White, which helps to balance Inchyra Blue’s depth without overly brightening.
