Farrow & Ball - Hopper Head (305)
Hopper Head takes its name from the decorative iron containers used to catch rainwater. A classic charcoal that sits between Railings and Down Pipe, it creates inviting spaces to withdraw to. It pairs beautifully with nearly every other Farrow & Ball shade or adds a touch of drama when used exclusively across the walls, ceiling and woodwork of a room.
Hopper Head
Hopper Head 305 is a classic charcoal shade, sitting very elegantly between Farrow & Ball’s Railings and Down Pipe. The colour is inspired by the iron rainwater “hopper heads” used to catch water at the top of down‑pipes, which gives it its architectural, slightly industrial feel.
In terms of tone, Hopper Head reads as a soft, deep grey-black — not a harsh black, but a rich charcoal that brings depth without overpowering.
Because of its deep tone, Farrow & Ball recommend using a dark-tone primer or undercoat to ensure a uniform, rich finish. The complementary white for pairing is Blackened (No. 2011) — a cooler white that complements the shade’s dark neutrality without clashing.
Hopper Head can bring drama to a feature wall or ceiling, but it’s also subtle enough to be used throughout a room, including on woodwork or built-ins, for a moody yet sophisticated scheme.
Hopper Head (305) is a refined, architectural charcoal that strikes a balance: it's rich and grounding, but not overly heavy — making it a smart choice when you want a strong, elegant dark without going full black.
