Sadolin's History

The Sadolin story is rooted in the challenging Scandinavian climate, with its origins dating back to 1777. It began when Jacob Holmblad, a Swedish native, received royal permission to establish a textile dye works in Copenhagen. Under his care and through subsequent generations, this enterprise evolved into a successful paint and varnish business.

In 1912, Holmblad & Co merged with Sadolin’s Farver, a company founded just five years earlier by the innovative Gunnar Asgeir Sadolin. Sadolin, inspired by the vibrant colours of Egyptian antiquities, was producing wax colours at the time. This union of heritage and innovation has shaped the Sadolin brand, and these two guiding principles continue to define it today, over a century later.

Exposure to sunlight and weather causes most woodstains to fade over time.
Sadolin products use specially selected light filtering pigments to promote longer lasting colours
Most woodstains blister and peel the longer the wood is exposed to the elements. Applying a maintenance coat requires extensive sanding and preparation if the wood is weathered.
With Sadolin, maintenance coats require minimal preparation due to the coating weathering naturally. This reduces time, expense and labour in following years.
Woodstains are normally waterproof, but they can also prevent natural moisture in the wood from escaping. This results in wood swelling and breaking the bond with the coating.
Sadolin products are designed to form a microporous "jacket", which is both waterproof and breathable, creating longer lasting protection for your wood.
