Product description

The Little Greene Mandalay Wallpaper draws its inspiration from the rich heritage of the dining room at Bateman's, a Jacobean mansion located in East Sussex. This design, with its intricate tree of life motif, harks back to the elaborate patterns found in 17th-century Indian chintzes. These chintzes often featured sinuous flowering trees with birds among their branches, and such designs were highly sought after during that era.

Interestingly, the Mandalay Wallpaper is directly influenced by leather wallcoverings that predate modern wallpaper as we know it today. While the creation of leather hangings required different skills, the way they were hung and their decorative effect in a room were quite similar to early wallpapers. The original leather hangings were documented as Dutch in origin, and they were acquired by Mr. and Mrs. Rudyard Kipling for 100 guineas in 1902 after they purchased Bateman's as their family home.

The paper version of the Mandalay Wallpaper is printed on a wide (70cm) roll, and the pattern has been adapted to seamlessly repeat along the wall. This wallpaper offers a unique blend of historical charm and artistic intricacy, making it a captivating choice for those looking to infuse their living spaces with a touch of heritage and elegance.
